Our Commitment to an Accessible Website

Accessibility is not a feature we bolted on at the end. It is part of how the site was put together, the same way a ramp or a wider doorway is part of how a house gets built rather than something added once the walls are up.

We treat an accessibility problem on this website the way we treat a callback on a job: tell us about it, and we will look at it and put it right. If a page will not work for you, the information on it is still yours, and we will find another way to get it to you.

How This Site Is Built

Every page on this website was built with the following in place:

Basement marble fireplace built in shelving, Coatesville
  • Headings, lists, and landmarks marked up properly, so a screen reader can announce the structure of a page instead of reading it as one long run of text.
  • A Skip to content link at the very top of every page, so keyboard users can jump straight past the menu.
  • Full keyboard operation: every link, button, menu, accordion, and form field can be reached and used without a mouse, and whatever holds focus is visibly outlined.
  • Descriptive alternative text on photographs, so the work shown in an image is described rather than skipped.
  • Text and background colors chosen to meet the contrast levels in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines at level AA, checked on every color the site uses.
  • Tap targets sized for a finger rather than a cursor, so links and buttons can be hit accurately on a phone.
  • Respect for the reduced motion setting on your device: turn it on, and the site's animations and smooth scrolling stop.
  • Layouts that reflow down to small screens and hold up when you enlarge the text in your browser.

The Accessibility Toolbar

This site carries an accessibility toolbar, reachable from the button that floats at the edge of every page. It gives you controls over how the site is presented, including larger text, wider spacing, higher contrast, highlighted links, and paused animations, and your choices follow you from page to page.

The toolbar is an addition to the work described above, not a substitute for it. The pages underneath are meant to work on their own.

The Standard We Work Toward

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is the benchmark most widely used to judge whether a website is usable by people with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities.

This is an ongoing commitment rather than a certificate. We check new pages and changes against that standard as the site grows, and we fix what falls short.

Where the Site May Fall Short

Parts of this website rely on services we do not control, including embedded maps and links out to social media. We cannot guarantee how accessible those services are, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

If you run into something on this site that you cannot use, please tell us. We would far rather hear about it than have you go without the information.

Tell Us About a Problem

Call us at (717) 875-9858 or email [email protected] and describe what happened. It helps us if you can include the address of the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using, though you do not need any of that to get in touch.

We will work with you to get you the information you were after, and we will use what you tell us to fix the site itself.
